  2. I'm Dr. Shirley Johnson, the director of the museum's internship program.
  3. Today, I'll be giving you an orientation to the museum
  4. and our museum administrator's internship program.
  5. Will we get a chance to tour the museum today?
  6. Yes.
  7. We'll start right now with a tour of the building.
  8. We'll skip the basement.
  9. Most of that part of the building is devoted to art conservation,
  10. which won't be part of your internship.
  11. Let's begin here, on the ground floor, with the museum offices.
  12. I guess this is where we'll be spending most of our time,
  13. helping with the office work.
  14. You'll spend some time working in here,
  15. so you can learn what the administrative duties involve.
  16. But you'll also get a chance to experience all aspects of museum work.
  17. This room in here is the museum tours office.
  18. I'm interested in that.
  19. I'd really like to help out with the tours.
  20. That's great, because you'll all have a chance to lead some tours,
  21. and maybe even to develop a tour of your own, too.
  22. Let's go up to the second floor now.
  23. This is the boardroom in here, isn't it?
  24. Will we get to go to board meetings?
  25. Only members of the board of directors attend those.
  26. Now, back here behind the galleries are the classrooms.
  27. You're all welcome to attend any class you want at no charge.
  28. But we won't be teaching any, will we?
  29. No, the staff of the education department is responsible for that.
  30. Let's move up to the third floor now and the research department.
  31. Each of you will spend some time working in here.
  32. Great.
  33. I'd like to help with the research.
  34. We're working on some very interesting research projects right now.
  35. Also, as an extension of your research work,
  36. you'll probably contribute to some of the museum's brochures.
  37. I'm looking forward to that.
  38. I like writing about art.
  39. Another thing I've been hoping to be able to do is meet some artists.
  40. You're in luck then.
  41. We've planned a reception for the first day of your internship,
  42. and you'll have the chance to meet several local artists then.
  43. Could you give us a little background of the museum?
  44. I mean, when it was built
  45. and some information about the collections and things like that?
  46. Of course.
  47. The main part of the museum was built in 1895 with a combination of public and private funds.
  48. The new wing was built 60 years later.
  49. with a donation from the Rhinebeck family.
  50. That part of the museum was built for the modern art collection, wasn't it?
  51. Yes, it was.
  52. In the main part of the museum,
  53. we have a gallery devoted to works by local artists,
  54. our sculpture collection, and a small collection of classical European art.
  55. You mentioned classes earlier.
  56. What kinds of classes does the museum offer?
  57. In our adult education program, we offer a series of art history classes.
  58. And for children, we have a program of arts and crafts workshops.
  59. You can get a brochure from the office
  60. that will give you more information.
  61. I saw a lot of chairs set up in the main hall.
  62. What are those for?
  63. Those are there for tonight's musical performance.
  64. We offer a weekly concert series during the fall and winter.
  65. And of course, all of you are welcome to attend.
