  2. It's good to see you all here.
  3. Welcome to Smith House.
  4. Smith House, as you may or may not know,
  5. Is one of the oldest residential colleges of the university.
  6. As you can see, the building you're in now,
  7. Which contains this main lounge, the dining room, the recreation room,
  8. The kitchen and the offices,
  9. Was part of the original old house built in the 1840s to be used by the family of George Smith.
  10. That's, of course, how the house and college got their names.
  11. The original house was converted into a residential college for the university in 1940
  12. And since then has continued to be added on to and modernised.
  13. You'll notice when you receive your room allocation in a
  14. Few minutes that your room number either begins with the letter N S or W,
  15. Like this one here.
  16. The first letter refers to the three wings of the college,
  17. Which come away from this main building.
  18. Of course, the letters represent the three directions,
  19. In this case, north, south and west.
  20. Each wing has two floors,
  21. And so the next number you see is either one or,
  22. In this case, two,
  23. And this indicates which floor your room is on.
  24. The number after that is your individual room number.
  25. So it's quite simple to find any room by going to the right wing,
  26. Then floor, and then room number.
  27. You'll also notice
  28. When you receive your orientation pack shortly that there are two keys.
  29. One is the key to your room
  30. And only you have that key
  31. And the other is a key to the front door
  32. Which you've just come through here from the street.
  33. This door is closed and locked at 8pm every night
  34. And opened again at 7am.
  35. You'll need your key
  36. If you're coming back to the college between those times.
  37. We ask all students to always enter
  38. And leave the college through the front door.
  39. You'll notice at the end of each corridor that there is another door,
  40. But these are fire doors and are kept locked from the outside.
  41. They should only be opened from the inside in case of emergency.
  42. In your fees, you've paid a laundry fee,
  43. Which covers the cleaning of bed linen and towels.
  44. All bed linen
  45. And towels are clearly embossed with the name Smith House.
  46. So it's easily identifiable.
  47. If you want your other laundry to be done by the college,
  48. This can be arranged for a small extra fee.
  49. There are only a few rules here at Smith House,
  50. And we have these rules
  51. So that we can all live comfortably together.
  52. The most important rule is that there must be no noise after 9pm.
  53. There is also no smoking in the rooms
  54. Or anywhere inside the college,
  55. But smoking is permitted on the balconies.
  56. All meals are served in the dining room.
  57. Mealtimes are listed in your orientation pack.
  58. Please read these carefully as mealtimes cannot be changed,
  59. And if you arrive late,
  60. I'm sorry to say, you'll just go hungry.
  61. If you're unsure about things, each floor has an elected floor senior,
  62. Who is usually a student in their third
  63. Or fourth year of study,
  64. Who's been at Smith House for a while.
  65. The floor seniors will introduce themselves later today
  66. And answer any questions you have.
