  2. My name's Elizabeth Reid and I'm your assistant welfare officer.
  3. What I'd like to do now is tell you a
  4. Little more about some of the social facilities available on the campus,
  5. And also to tell you something about what the town has to offer.
  6. As you probably know already,
  7. The Student Union Building is the main centre of social life here,
  8. As indeed it is in most British universities.
  9. The Union runs a weekly programme of events for all tastes.
  10. Oh, everything from discos to talks by guest speakers.
  11. Many of these events are fundraising activities for charities,
  12. Which the union takes very seriously.
  13. They manage the Students' Union paper shop,
  14. Selling magazines and newspapers, as well as stationery, sweets and so on.
  15. Then, let me see...
  16. Oh, there's the ticket shop,
  17. Where you can get some very good deals on,
  18. Well, for example, coaches to London or inexpensive charter flights.
  19. As cheap as you'll get anywhere, people say.
  20. Or tickets for big pop groups playing here
  21. Or at other venues all over the country.
  22. Or plays in London.
  23. Oh, and we mustn't forget the union cafeteria
  24. And the big new diner.
  25. Yes, did you have a question?
  26. Yeah, does the union also provide help with any problems?
  27. I mean, advice on financial problems, for example.
  28. Or does the university provide that?
  29. Yes, the union run their own advice service offering help with financial matters such as grants.
  30. I'm sure you realise anything medical should be discussed with the University Medical Service,
  31. Which also has an excellent counselling centre.
  32. I think that was made clear yesterday.
  33. However, the union has its own officer
  34. Who can give advice on legal problems.
  35. Now on to Radford.
  36. For a town of its size,
  37. Radford has some unusually good leisure and community facilities
  38. And has quite a good shopping centre with an interesting range of shops.
  39. As you go into Radford, there's a new,
  40. Well, quite new, Olympic-sized swimming pool.
  41. That's on the outskirts at a place called Renton.
  42. Above the pool, there's a high-tech fitness centre.
  43. Are there any ice skaters here?
  44. No? Oh, pity.
  45. The facilities for ice skating are excellent.
  46. Well, the new Metro Tower, right in the centre of town,
  47. Has got an ice rink and a sports hall for squash,
  48. Badminton, volleyball and several other indoor sports.
  49. And in the same building, there's a new cinema with six screens.
  50. Then... Let me see.
  51. In the main square, just two minutes' walk from the Metro Tower,
  52. There's the Theatre Royal, which often gets London productions on tour.
  53. And in the streets nearby,
  54. You can find a good range of inexpensive restaurants,
  55. Including Indian, Chinese, Thai and Italian.
