  2. Well, I heard about these counselling sessions from a friend doing a science course
  3. And I was really interested.
  4. I think they should be compulsory, really.
  5. Well, to be quite honest, John,
  6. I think they would be useful for everybody, but, well...
  7. Everybody has their own way of going about things.
  8. I prefer people just to drop in when they can.
  9. Yes. I find that talking to students about the requirements
  10. Of a course helps to clarify what needs to be done.
  11. I mean, the biggest difference between college
  12. And school is that new college students really have to do a lot of work on their own.
  13. And it's sometimes useful to get advice
  14. on how to take control of your time and work effectively.
  15. Yes, I mean, it seems like a very light workload until assignment time comes,
  16. and then I seem to be working all night sometimes.
  17. I'm not the only one. It's ridiculous.
  18. The resource center is very good,
  19. but it closes so early.
  20. It's in the library, and
  21. so you think you could use it more.
  22. It's a real problem for me.
  23. Well, you're certainly not the only person in that position,
  24. as I'm sure you've found.
  25. It really comes down to using every available hour in a systematic way.
  26. If you do this with a plan,
  27. Then you'll find that you still have time for yourself
  28. And your hobbies as well.
  29. Yeah. I've heard from Thomas that you made him a sort of plan like this,
  30. And he's going away for the weekend with all his work handed in,
  31. Whereas I haven't even started.
  32. I need to find out a few more things about you first.
  33. I'll give you this form to fill in about your lectures
  34. And things before you leave
  35. Now, what are your main problems?
  36. Well, what most concerns me is I'm still not doing very well in my assignments.
  37. Well, I know that you plan your writing carefully,
  38. But this can come to nothing
  39. If the assignment doesn't answer the question.
  40. That really is the key.
  41. You must read the question carefully
  42. And give it a great deal of thought before you even start planning
  43. Or writing your first draft.
  44. It's also vital to check your work for errors.
  45. Everybody makes them, and they can influence the person marking the work.
  46. So always take time at the end to check what you've written.
  47. As far as listening is concerned...
  48. I find it hard to keep up sometimes in lectures,
  49. Especially two-hour ones.
  50. I sometimes just seem to go off into a dream.
  51. It's a good idea to find out from your lecturers
  52. If they mind you recording the lectures.
  53. You only need one of those small cassette recorders.
  54. The quality is pretty good,
  55. And a second listening can really clarify things.
  56. Something else you can do is check your notes with a friend.
  57. After the lecture.
  58. Yes, that's a good idea.

  60. Though, especially when there's so much reading to do.

  62. Not to confine yourself to reading on your subject.
  63. You should also read things of general interest that appeal to you.
  64. You know, novels, newspapers, that kind of thing.
  65. Do you have a good dictionary?
  66. Not really. I've never bothered with one.
  67. It would probably be a good idea to get one.
  68. Dictionaries aren't expensive, and they can help a lot.
