  1. Well, good afternoon.
  2. In today's session,
  3. John Upton will be sharing some of the findings of his research project from last term.
  4. John. Thanks. Well, first of all,
  5. A little bit about the background to the project.
  6. Our title, as you can see, is pretty straightforward.
  7. Car Safety. But these days,
  8. There's a lot more to it than the usual injunctions about drinking
  9. And driving, or speeding.
  10. I'd been interested
  11. And horrified by several newspaper reports on what people call road rage.
  12. For example, the famous incident of a man getting out of his car in a car park
  13. And hitting the driver of a van who had overtaken him earlier.
  14. It seemed to me that that there were almost
  15. As many serious problems when cars were parked, i.e. i.e.
  16. Were stationary, as when they were travelling at 90 miles an hour.
  17. So I decided to make this the focus of the project.
  18. For our research, we depended mainly on talking to individuals,
  19. Asking them questions rather than using written questionnaires.
  20. We stopped people at a selected garage on the motorway over a two-day period.
  21. And asked them questions about what they'd observed or experienced themselves.
  22. Our respondents were both men and women,
  23. But the women were just slightly in the majority.
  24. We were pleased by the public's willingness to stop
  25. And chat to us.
  26. In the end,
  27. We talked to a total of 135 drivers over those two days.
  28. So, what were our findings?
  29. Well, as you can see...
  30. 93% of respondents had had some kind of problem.
  31. A surprisingly large percentage, 24%,
  32. Had had their car damaged in some way.
  33. But the main type of incident was being shouted at.
  34. 79% had experienced that.
  35. 15% had experienced violence on their own persons.
  36. They'd actually been hit by someone.
  37. The police... tended only to be informed
  38. When there was physical violence involved.
  39. So, what strategies had people developed to ensure their own safety?
  40. Let's have a look at the figures here.
  41. Well, first of all,
  42. It was quite striking that there were often distinct answers from the men and women.
  43. It was mainly women, for example,
  44. Who said one shouldn't ever stop to find out how to get somewhere.
  45. Whereas it was men
  46. Who said you should try to avoid looking directly at other drivers.
  47. Both men and women...
  48. Oh, sorry, no.
  49. It was women who said you had to tell someone
  50. When you were due to get to a particular destination.
  51. Then, I had thought that it would be mainly men,
  52. But both sexes made the point that it's much safer to get keys out well in advance
  53. As you go towards your car.
  54. Men were very aware that muggers
  55. Or whatever might be concealed behind the car.
  56. They also made the point that you should leave plenty of room
  57. When you park your car,
  58. So you can make a quick getaway if you need to.
  59. Finally, locking doors at all times.
  60. Men didn't think it was quite as important as women,
  61. But both gave it a high safety rating.
  62. When we asked them what they thought the best improvements
  63. Had been in the last five years in helping with road rage problems...
