  4. In this part of the interview
  5. We like to talk through your application form,
  6. Your experience to date, etc.,
  7. And then in the second part,
  8. You go for a group interview.
  9. Group interview. Yes, I understand.
  10. So, your first degree was in economics.
  11. Yes, but I also did politics as a major strand.
  12. And you graduated in 1989.
  13. And I see you've been doing some teaching.
  14. Yes, I worked as a volunteer teacher in West Africa.
  15. I was there for almost three years in total, from... 1992... 1992.
  16. How interesting. What organisation was that with? It's not one of the major ones.
  17. It's called Teach South. Oh, right.
  18. Yes, I have heard of it.
  19. It operates in several African countries, doesn't it?
  20. And what kind of school was it?
  21. A rural co-operative. Oh, a rural co-operative. How interesting.
  22. And what did you teach?
  23. A variety of things in different years.
  24. Um... I did with Forms 1 to 3, mainly Geography,
  25. And some English with Form 5.
  26. Then in my final year,
  27. I took on some Agricultural Science with the top year.
  28. That's Form 6. Right. Quite a variety then.
  29. I also ran the school farm. How interesting!
  30. And I also found it frustrating to have so few teaching resources.
  31. But I did decide to stay
  32. And in the end I extended my tour to a third year.
  33. Right. Things must have looked up then.
  34. Yes, we set up a very successful project breeding cattle to sell locally.
  35. Really? And then after a lot of hard
  36. Work we finally got funds for new farm buildings.
  37. And you wanted to see things through? Uh-huh.
  38. And that's why you want to train to teach geography?
  39. Yes. I've had a couple of jobs since then.
  40. But I now realise I like teaching best.
  41. And I chose geography because...
  42. Because it's my favourite subject.
  43. And also because I think it has so many useful applications.
  44. Well, you certainly have had some interesting work experience.
