  1. Hello everybody and welcome to this informal meeting about the university helpline.
  2. The helpline was set up ten years ago by the Students' Union
  3. And it aims to provide new
  4. Students to the university with a service that they can use
  5. If they need information about practical areas of student life
  6. That they're unfamiliar with. Let me give you some
  7. Examples of the type of help we can offer.
  8. We can provide information on financial matters. For example,
  9. You may feel that your grant is insufficient to see you through college life,
  10. Or you may have some queries regarding the fees you're paying
  11. If you're an overseas student.
  12. In both cases, the helpline would be able to go through things with you
  13. And see what the outcome might be. Another
  14. Area we can help with is what we generally term the domestic area.
  15. Things such as child care and the availability of nursery provision, for example,
  16. Come under this. Then there's academic issues that may arise
  17. While you're in the early stages of your course that you
  18. May not know what to do about.
  19. You may wish to know more about essay deadlines, for example,
  20. Or how to use the library.
  21. There are... All kinds of questions you will find yourself asking
  22. And not knowing where to get quick answers from. The helpline
  23. Would be able to provide these.
  24. The last example I've given here is simply termed social,
  25. And yes, there is a lot of social life here,
  26. But you may have a particular interest you wish to pursue,
  27. Or you may wish to participate in outings or trips
  28. If you don't know many people at the moment.
  29. Let me give you some details
  30. So that you know where to go and
  31. Who to see if you want to pay us a visit.
  32. Generally, you'll see our helpline officer, Jackie Kuachi. That's K-O-U-A-C-H-I.
  33. Jackie is a full-time employee of the Student Union,
  34. And she works in the Student Welfare Office.
  35. That's the office that deals with all matters related to student welfare.
  36. And it's located at 13 Marshall Road.
  37. I have some maps here for those of you
  38. Who haven't been there yet.
  39. If you wish to ring the office, the number is 326-9940.
  40. That's 326-9940. The office is open between 9.30 9.30
  41. And 6 o'clock on weekdays
  42. And from 10 to 4 on Saturdays.
  43. And there'll be somebody there,
  44. Usually Jackie or myself, between those times.
  45. If you want to make an appointment,
  46. You can phone or call at the office in person.
  47. Please note that it
  48. May not be possible for anyone to see you straight away,
  49. Particularly if it's a busy time, lunchtime for example,
  50. And you may have to go on the waiting list
  51. And then come back later.
  52. Well, enough from me. Any questions?
