  1. Good evening. Tonight's show comes to you from the Good Home exhibition
  2. In Duke's Court where we've been trying
  3. Out some of the latest gadgets on show here
  4. And getting our resident expert,
  5. Liz Shearer, to tell us which ones are worth buying
  6. And which will die a death.
  7. Well, hello. Yes, John, I've been investigating four new household gadgets
  8. And sorting out the advantages and disadvantages
  9. And then really deciding what are must-buys,
  10. What are maybe-buys and what are never-buys.
  11. Let's start with this vacuum flask for keeping drinks hot.
  12. Well, I felt this had quite a lot going for it.
  13. Most of all is the fact that it contains no glass
  14. And is therefore unbreakable to all intents and purposes.
  15. It's made of stainless steel, which is guaranteed for 20 years.
  16. Hope that's long enough.
  17. And it's true what the manufacturer claims,
  18. That it does maintain heat for 18 hours.
  19. So that's pretty good. On the downside it
  20. Really works out to be quite expensive
  21. And much more surprisingly it unfortunately leaves a strange taste
  22. You know when you've drunk from it so
  23. All in all my recommendation would be it's got plenty of advantages
  24. But it is rather expensive so
  25. I'd say you should maybe buy it
  26. Moving on to a natty little device the whistle key holder
  27. Basically this is where you whistle
  28. And the keyholder gives off a high-pitched noise and flashes light,
  29. So you can find it.
  30. One advantage of this model
  31. Is that it also has a small light.
  32. You press the button,
  33. And this means you can find keyholes easily.
  34. I also felt the small size was a real advantage. On the weaker side,
  35. I did find the noise unpleasant,
  36. Which I'm sure the designers could have done something about.
  37. And I found that it didn't work through metal, so
  38. It's mainly useful finding in coat pockets, cushions, etc.
  39. But taken as a whole,
  40. I thought it was a masterpiece of design
  41. And would highly recommend it.
  42. The third gizmo is called the army flashlight
  43. Because it was developed initially for military use.
  44. It works by squeezing the handle to generate the power.
  45. Its advantages are that it can be used for outside activities and also,
  46. And this is one of the surprising features,
  47. It does work underwater. My main objection to it,
  48. Though, was although it did work in these conditions,
  49. This model gave off a weak light.
  50. So my recommendation, I'm afraid,
  51. Would have to be to avoid this one.
  52. The decoy camera was last on my list.
  53. This is a fake video camera
  54. Which you fix to your wall to scare off burglars.
  55. The advantage of this model is something which makes it look very realistic.
  56. It's flashing light. On the downside...
  57. It was quite difficult to fix to the wall.
  58. However, burglary is such a major
  59. Problem these days that it is worth the effort.
  60. So, this gets my strong recommendation.
